Abetone
The resort of Abetone is known as the most famous ski resort in central Italy. The village lies at 1388 meters above sea level and is famous for beautiful scenery and high peaks that form a ring around. It derives its name from a huge fir tree that was felled to make way for eighteenth-century streets of Modena, to whom we owe the development of the town, even if the surrounding Apennine ridges were affected since ancient times by major connecting roads, linking the north and south of the peninsula.
Already nineteenth Abetone became a popular summer resort, especially with the discovery of the locality by some families of the Italian nobility: between those who lived there remember Giacomo Puccini, who owned a villa. But began to talk about winter tourism in the thirties of the twentieth century, when the launch took place as a center of fashion, but the real boom came in the fifties, when thanks to the fame of the great ski champions Zeno Colò, Celina Seghi and Vittorio Chierroni, Abetone has become an important ski resort.
About forty ski slopes cover more than fifty kilometers and allow the practice of winter sports at any level of difficulty, all connected by ski lifts.
During the good season Abetone abandoned his ski vocation, becomes by virtue of the numerous hiking, a privileged place for those who want to live in contact with the beautiful landscape and its nature: for in-depth knowledge of the paths you can refer to the map CAI (Italian Alpine Club), while for deep knowledge of the Apennine flora exists here a Botanical Garden, which is one of the routes of the Ecomuseum of the Pistoia Mountains.
